WOODSTOCK — The Board of Selectmen discussed potential plans for the town’s bicentennial celebration that kicks off Feb. 7, 2015, with a mock town meeting at the fire station.
Town Manager Vern Maxfield said a list of ideas for the mock town meeting and the official celebration June 20 and 21, 2015, were presented at the Planning Committee’s recent meeting.
The town was established by charter on Feb. 8, 1815.
Maxfield said he will dress in period clothing and read the charter at the mock town meeting.
“I was also thinking that we could find out some of the things that happened around February in 1815, and have someone act as a town crier and yell out the news to people as they walk in,” Maxfield said.
Among the other items the Planning Committee came up with for the mock meeting were singing the official Woodstock song, slide shows of old pictures and musical performances.
Maxfield said the Conservation Commission recently came up with an interesting idea for the June celebration.
“Basically, everyone would be given a passport, and people could go around to different notable places in Woodstock and get that location stamped off on their passport,” Maxfield said. “It’s a fun little thing for people to do throughout the day.”
Nothing official has been scheduled for the June celebration, Maxfield said, though the Planning Committee has brainstormed several ideas.
“We’re looking to get a time capsule set up so people can put in whatever items they think belong in there,” Maxfield said. “I know that Geoff and Heidi Inman have been using their metal detectors in an old area of town, and they’ve found a lot of old artifacts. I’m seeing if they’d be interested in doing a presentation of some of the old items.”
Maxfield said he also wanted to see if people could tell some old stories about Woodstock on Feb. 7 and June 20 and 21.
Some of the other ideas Maxfield mentioned were a quilt raffle, an auto show, a performance by the Mahoosuc Community Band, a chicken barbecue at the Masonic Lodge and demonstrations of lumberjacking and whittling.
