OXFORD — “It shot like a rocket,” Justin Stygles said, describing the moment his 2006 Toyota Matrix crashed through a window at Subway Restaurant on Route 26 on Thursday afternoon.

He and his wife, Amanda, had stopped to pick up lunch around noon. While his wife waited inside for their order, Stygles said he returned to the car and backed it out of its parking space. When he put his foot on the brake to put the car in gear, he said the vehicle lunged forward over a curb and through the store’s plate glass window.

The window was shattered by the impact, sending glass into the restaurant. Stygles said the air bags didn’t deploy on impact.

“No one was injured,” Marvin Mayberry, one of the Subway owners, said. No one was sitting in the area of the restaurant closest to the window, he said. “The staff was clearly a little shook up by the incident.”

The building’s landlords were at that scene and will contact the insurance companies and make arrangements for repairs.

Mayberry said Subway will remove all the food present at the time of the crash to protect customers from ingesting glass. He said staff will clean the restaurant, temporarily board up the window and hope to reopen Friday.

“No charges will be filed,” patrolman Zane Loper of Oxford Police Department said.
