AUBURN — The St. Dominic Academy Saints used their skill against the Winslow Black Raiders in the 8-3 victory in girls’ hockey action.

Kim Johnson had a hat trick while Jessica Boulet had two goals and an assist in the victory.

“It was a good night, we knew Winslow was going to be a fiesty team,” St. Dom’s coach Paul Gosselin said. “I know the coach well and he has players ready to come play.” 

It didn’t take long for the Saints to get on the board as Boulet skated across the crease and slid the puck in on the backhand 1:41 into the game. The lone assist went to Tia Rotolico.

The Black Raiders responded quickly as Miranda Gagne found the back of the net at the 3:15 mark. Paige Vielleux picked up the assist.

“The thing we are trying to do because we have a lot of first year players, is trying to develop them as they go,” Winslow coach Chris Downing said. We have a couple of skilled players, but they had more skilled players than us. The result is what you saw.” 

The tie didn’t last long as Johnson found the back of the net 28 seconds later for her first goal of the evening.

“Once our legs got going and got some shots on net, the girls were playing well,” Gosselin said. “Defensemen stepped up with goals. (Kim) Johnson got a hat trick and it was highlighted by Rachel Kurtz’s first goal of her career.” 

St. Dom’s (2-3) ended the first period with a 3-1 advantage as Callie Samson put home a loose puck into the net with 5:01 remaining in the opening stanza. Alexa Kesaris and Logan Ronan were credited with the assists.

Johnson picked up her second goal of the game 7:19 into the second period with Ronan and Taylor Bergeron setting the goal up. Kesaris stretched the lead to 5-1 with an unassisted marker 10:18 into the middle period.

Winslow finally picked up some momentum as Veilleux ripped a shot past St. Dom’s goalie Payton Winslow with 3:06 remaining in the period. The assist went to Jacie Cain. Twenty-six seconds later, Hillary Libby punched the puck home with Gagne and Sarah Stevens picking up the assists.

“When we were down 5-1, we came back with two quick ones to make it 5-3,” Downing said. “It’s coming, but it’s a matter of time and matter of effort.” 

St. Dom’s took advantage a power play when Callie Samson fed Johnson for the hat trick with 57 seconds remaining in the period.

The Saints went 1-for-2 on the power play while Winslow was scoreless on their only chance

Boulet added her second goal of the game seven seconds into the third period on an unassisted effort. Kurtz capped the scoring 6:28 into the third period as her shot slid past legs and skates into the net. Samson and Boulet added to their point total as they picked up assists on the goal.

“It’s always nice to see someone get their first goal,” Gosselin said of Kurtz’s goal.

Payton Winslow made 11 saves in the victory while Kiana Richard also stopped 11 shots for the Black Raiders (0-5).
