BUCKFIELD — The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of electrical wiring stripped from the walls of the $1 million fire and rescue station under construction.
More than 100 feet of wiring was reported missing last Thursday after a worker entered the station, which is in front the Town Office on Turner Street.
Police have not put a numerical value on the loss, which will likely include the cost rewiring, Oxford County Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Landis said in a phone interview Monday morning.
Landis said it is common for stolen wiring to be stripped and the copper inside sold.
Town officials were notified of the theft last week, Town Manager Cindy Dunn confirmed.
Buckfield is constructing a $1 million station to house its emergency response vehicles. The shell is up and it is heated.
The site is locked up at night, according to H.E. Callahan Construction Vice President Jonathan Sirois. No damage was done to the building other than the missing wiring, he said.
Sirois said Monday that engineers were still calculating the replacement costs, though they do not appear to be significant. It is the only reported theft at the site, he said, adding that it is not expected to delay construction.
