PORTLAND — The Choral Art Society invites music lovers to ring in the New Year with the

with its annual “Epiphany Celebration.” Music includes stunning a cappella settings plus selections from Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610. The event takes place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, at Williston-Immanuel United Church, 156 High Street. The performance will be conducted by CAS Music Director Robert Russell.

The Choral Art Society’s Camerata specializes in a cappella music from the Renaissance through the 21st century. Previous performances include Richard Einhorn’s oratorio Voices of Light as an accompaniment to Carl Theodor Dreyer’s silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, and, with the Portland Ballet Company, Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore.

An “Epiphany Celebration” will feature the music of Palestrina, Monteverdi, and Duruflé along with contemporary composers Kevin Siegfried, Carl Rütti, and Michael McGlynn. The program also will include an encore performance of “The Bells I Heard,” the winning carol from CAS’s New England Carol Contest, which received its premiere at the recent Christmas at the Cathedral concerts.

Tickets are $20 per person, and can be purchased at www.choralart.org or Longfellow Books in Portland, the Book Review in Falmouth, and Nonesuch Books in South Portland. Tickets are for open seating and there are no youth tickets available for this event.
