DEAR SUN SPOTS: The United Way of Oxford County is looking for volunteers to help run its Rock, Paper, Scissors Triple Crown Series.

Volunteers will be needed to help register participants, hand out water along the race course, point runners in the right direction, and help set up as well.

There will be three races total; volunteers can sign up to help at one or all three races.

The first race will be Feb. 1 in Norway, the second will be March 15 in Rumford and the last April 12 in Bethel.

If you are interested in volunteering at these races, please email info@uwoxfordcounty.org or call 743-5833. — Kimberly Preble, kpreble@uwoxfordcounty.org

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I enjoy your column and read it daily. I’ve taken advantage of much of the material. Now I need help. Is there a seamstress who can re-line a jacket for me? Thank you. — Margaret Cary, Rangeley

ANSWER: Sun Spots doesn’t have anyone in Rangeley, but you could probably make arrangements by phone and then mail the jacket.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I need to find someone locally who fixes old CD-stereo-radios. I have one about 25 years old that skips when playing CDs (5-disc changer), but I don’t want to just throw it away.

It is a great unit and has worked faithfully for many, many years. The newer ones don’t sound as good as my older one so I don’t really want to buy a brand new one.

Can you help? Thanks so much! — Sandy

ANSWER: Sun Spots has three options in her Rolodex, but the last two have not returned her phone calls the last time or two, so she’s not sure what their status is.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For some inexplicable reason, the leadership of the local chapter of a group I belong to condones the smoking of tobacco products within the club to the detriment of the club’s nonsmoking members, its employees, its many entertainers, the guests of its members and to the smoking members themselves!

Apparently, it believes that if it disallows smoking, the smoking members of the club will go elsewhere and it will lose business. However, everyone that I speak with believes that if smoking were outlawed, it would be a boon for the club’s business. Please ascertain why the club’s leadership allows this health-jeopardizing practice to continue. Thank you. — Steve Swan, Dixfield

ANSWER: Sun Spots is sorry, but this question really isn’t in her bailiwick. It’s an internal matter of a private club, which is why she omitted the name of the club.

However, she does have a suggestion: Vote the leaders out and bring in some nonsmokers to run things. Even if the current officers don’t smoke themselves, their sentiments must lie with the smokers. A changing of the guard seems to be in order.
