RANGELEY — The Board of Selectmen met with town officers Monday to discuss the direction for a recycling program at the town’s transfer station.
New plans are needed because Rangeley’s previous recycling partner, Sandy River Recycling of Farmington, recently shut down its operations.
Discussion included pros and cons of single-stream recycling or pay-as-you-go with either clear plastic bags to be purchased from the town, or sheets of stickers that can be applied to regular bags.
Possible features include a new exit road at the station to allow a one-way loop past all the areas and adequate staffing to explain procedures and take fees. The transfer station was described as a service center to help residents.
“We want people to recycle. That’s how they save money,” station director Rick Godaire said.
Selectman Cynthia Egan pointed out that the Bargain Barn, a reuse facility on the recycling premises, should stay. “It’s a real feature of our operation and it’s very popular.”
Godaire added that the public must be invited for input and suggested that a meeting be scheduled to ask residents for suggestions.
Interim Town Manager Tim Pellerin said a lot of communities in Maine are operating on one plan or the other, and suggested asking them how it’s working.
