WINDSOR — An overnight standoff with police in Windsor ended early Saturday morning when a 36-year-old man shot himself inside his home.
Police were called to the Barton Road home of Wayne Bland around 9 p.m. Friday after his relatives called police to say the man was suicidal and “had taken a number of pills,” according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
When Kennebec County deputies and Maine State Police troopers arrived, the man fired several shots. McCausland didn’t specify whether those gunshots were inside the home or directed outside toward officers.
State police negotiators and a tactical team were called to the scene. Negotiators spoke with Bland over the phone in attempts to talk him into surrendering.
Just after 2 a.m., Bland shot himself in the face, according to McCausland. He was able to leave the house and police took him into custody.
McCausland said Bland is being treated at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville.
McCausland said an elderly relative of Bland was inside the home at the time of the standoff but was not injured. Police say Bland fired “over a half-dozen shots” during the course of the standoff. Police did not fire their weapons.
An update on Bland’s condition was not immediately available Saturday morning.
