
On Jan. 3, the annual Maine State Martial Arts Ratings and Totals Championships (SMART) were held at the Alfond Arena in Waterville.
Adults and youth statewide who placed first through fourth place during the year were invited to participate and attend. Three young women from the River Valley Area participated and brought home some fabulous awards.
Becca Dailey, a sophomore at Dirigo High School, is State Champion in Kata;
Kirsten Soucy, an eighth grader at Holy Savior School in Rumford, is Divisional Double Crown champion in Kata and Fighting, and state champion in Fighting;
Kayla Provencher, Karate Coach at Focus Karate Academy of Rumford, is the Divisional Double Crown champion in Kata and Weapons, and state champion in Kata.
These young women are dedicated to their sport, attend practices up to five times per week, and attend competitions on a monthly basis.
