LEWISTON — Twin City Spinners will start a new square dance class on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Martel Elementary School at the corner of Lisbon Street and East Avenue. First-time dancers can try for free.
This is not your granddaddy’s square dance! It’s time to erase the old image of square dancing from school days and television. Today’s dancing is done to great music from the best of country, rock, disco, gospel, hip-hop and bluegrass. Best of all, there are new people to meet, friends to make, events to attend.
This is an activity that is drug-, alcohol- and smoke-free. You can make new friends, forget your troubles and get some exercise.
Join members any Thursday evening and get a sample of this great group, or come on any community dance night for a full hour of dancing.
TCS is a modern square dance club, open to dancers ages 12 and above (adult member must attend with minor children) and dancing to a variety of music including jazz, Latin, country, rock, disco, modern dance as well as more traditional country and bluegrass. Introductory classes are formed twice a year, usually in October and February. Visit twincityspinners.squaredanceme.us for more information.
The club is lead by caller/instructor Al Hipkins who has been dancing since 1972 and calling and teaching since 2007. Hipkins calls throughout New England and has called as far west as Nashville. In addition to teaching and calling square dance, Hipkins also teaches line dancing, two-step and waltz. He is also a recording artist and owner of Hipster Productions record company.
