Training for required pesticide license
LISBON FALLS — University of Maine Cooperative Extension is offering growers a training session for the Bureau of Pesticide Control private pesticide applicator core exam from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Ramada Conference Center, 490 Pleasant St. Participants also have the option of taking the exam from 1 to 3 p.m.
Effective April 1, 2015, a new Maine state law requires a pesticide license for fruit, vegetable and grain growers who use only general-use (over-the-counter) pesticides, and annually sell more than $1,000 of plants or plant products intended for human consumption. Each operation must have at least one licensed owner or employee on the farm. To qualify for the license, the candidate must pass the private pesticide applicator core exam.

Senior Citizens Cribbage League
LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Lewiston Memorial Armory on Jan. 22 were: first, Sandy Oliver and Val Asselin; second, Cecile and George Bussiere; third, Terry Lefebvre and Richard Cloutier; fourth, Claudette Grandmaison and Roger Charpentier; fifth, Ed Madden and Roger Labbe.

Valentines being gathered for veterans
LEWISTON — The public is asked to drop off or mail Valentines for veterans by Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1155 Lisbon St., Lewiston.
Valentines cards will be sent to veterans at Togus and to those serving overseas.
They can be dropped off to Jerry DeWitt at Tri-County Mental Health, 1155 Lisbon St.

Auburn Library plans wellness challenge
AUBURN — Auburn Public Library will hold its first Community Wellness Challenge starting March 2.
The library invites all to participate.
Registration papers are available at the library. This fun community challenge, completed at your own pace in the comfort of your home, is free and prizes will be awarded to those who earn the most points.
The challenge will be launched at the annual Farmer’s Market on Feb. 27 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., giving participants the chance to stock up on homemade and homegrown foods in preparation for the wellness adventure.
