Mayor Wiseman says that the matter of Lewiston getting the proposed State built armory lies in the hands of the people. After a conference with the committee from the chamber of commerce, Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Wiseman decided that enough time had elapsed, and within two days, will advertise a public meeting of the City Council and Chamber of Commerce for the sole purpose of getting at the armory question. The city must transfer the title of the land to the State which pays for, equips and maintains the armory. The land where the city stables and street department’s offices are, 100 by 200, facing Blake and Middle streets, the “Haymarket Square,” is the ideal location in the minds of the mayor and the committee from the Chamber of Commerce.

Up to 30 city employees who work at the Goldthwaite Road trash-to-energy plant in Auburn will be out of jobs within several weeks when the public firm which has assumed ownership of the facility shuts it down for demolition. All but six members of Local 592 of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union will be eligible for a severance package with compensation that varies from between two to six weeks pay depending on their length of employment. Employees who have worked at the facility for less than one year do not qualify for the severance benefits, Deputy City Manager Steve Lewis said.
