DEAR SUN SPOTS: Perhaps you could occasionally reprint the instructions on Google printing. http://tinyurl.com/3ufnme3 is no longer accessible to the general public; it now requires a digital subscription to Sun Journal. Thanks for all you do! — No Name via email

ANSWER: Ask and you shall receive!

Many readers who look up old newspaper stories on the archive Google provides for the Sun Journal, the Daily Sun and Evening Journal have discovered to their dismay that they cannot print out those stories using the usual “print key” method. Sun Spots doesn’t know why Google doesn’t enable the print function. It may relate to copyright issues.

At any rate, there are a couple ways around this, albeit a bit time consuming.

Start with the “print screen” key (it’s at the top of your keyboard; if it’s on the top with a line under it, you will also need to hit the shift key at the same time). Then paste what has been saved into Microsoft Paint. This process will present exactly what’s on the screen, ads and all, but you can use the functions in Paint to erase the extras, leaving what you want, and then print.

This sounds pretty simple, but it may take a few tries to get the hang of.

Some computers also have a “grab” function. In some systems it might also be called a “snipping tool.” Whether this is available on your computer will depend on whether you are using a Macintosh or what version of Windows your computer is running.

The grabbing/snipping tool does enable you to grab what’s on the screen, but if the entire article won’t fit on the screen, you’d have to try and grab it in pieces and then “paste” them together in another program that will allow you to compile and manipulate what appears on the screen.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am in the fifth grade doing a state report and am really interested in your state. I need help for my report so I can learn a lot more. I was wondering if your readers might help me. I know one fact about Maine — your state animal is a moose.

If readers could send me some of these items, it would be very thoughtful. You could send me a flag, a postcard or an old yearbook. Thank you for helping on my state report.

By the way, when you send me things we can’t mail them back. Our state fair is in May, so if you could please send items to me at my school address in April I will be able to use them in my display and report.

I want to visit Maine. I think it is a beautiful place to live. Please mail something that I can show everyone how magnificent your state is. Thank you very much. — Bruce Talbert, Mrs. Talbert’s class, Conway School, 19710 State Route 534, Mount Vernon, WA 98274

ANSWER: Sun Spots noticed that the student and teacher have the same last name, so she went back to double-check and make sure she hadn’t erred, and she hadn’t. Their names are the same, reason unknown.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have been reading in your column about the senior citizen (over age 62) mugs at Dunkin’ Donuts. Most all shops are out of stock as mentioned. The Dunkin’ Donuts on Kitty Hawk Avenue in Auburn had the mugs available as of Sunday, Jan. 18.

They are under different ownership then the other area stores. You can get one for free if you have ID with you proving you’re 62 or older. Each person that is getting a mug must be present with valid ID. From what I understand, there may have been people taking advantage of the program. The cup entitles you to a 62-cent coffee (with tax, totaling 67 cents) every day.

I would suggest, as a gesture of goodwill to the Dunkin’ Donut franchise owner, that it would be nice if you patronized their business by buying something when you get your free mug. — Peter via email
