ELLSWORTH — Nonprofit and public organizations seeking funding for projects that draw on the strengths of the community and foster collaboration are encouraged to apply to the Western Mountains Fund, part of the Maine Community Foundation’s Community Building Grant Program.

A volunteer committee of residents and business leaders from Franklin and Somerset counties reviews grants and makes recommendations for funding. The deadline for applying is Feb. 15. Application and guidelines are available at www.mainecf.org.

In 2014, the Western Mountains Committee awarded nine grants that totaled more than $63,000. They included:

· $9,000 to High Peaks Creative Council, to connect the Maine High Peaks assets though strategic place-making.

· $10,000 to Maine Huts & Trails, to enhance learning for school and youth groups within Franklin and Somerset counties through youth environmental and experiential education programs.

· $5,000 to Old Canada Road Scenic Byway, Inc., to fund an interpretive program of culture, history and environment on a 12-mile recreational trail.
