LEWISTON – The Lewiston High School girls’ hockey team didn’t show any rust in its first game in nine days as the Blue Devils’ dispatched the Greely Rangers 7-2 Wednesday night.

Lewiston coach Ron Dumont was pleased with the effort.

“We had some days off and we didn’t come prepared to play,”Dumont said of a 3-3 tie against Scarborough on Jan. 19. “It happens sometimes. We were in a similar scenario so we talked about this going into this (game). We hadn’t planned this day off (on Tuesday) or prior to warming up in their dry-land warm-up. We said, “we can’t come in with the same attitude. You need to get your feet going.’ They responded very well.”

Greely will press the reset button and look forward to preparing for the playoffs.

“We will forget about this one and move on,”Greely coach Nate Guerin said. “We think we have a really good chance. We know we need to come with a better effort than that. We need to put together some consistency and do some simple things better.”

Erica Lemieux opened up the scoring 8:23 into the first. The goal was set up by Corinne Laberge. In her next shift, Lemieux doubled the Blue Devils (16-0-1) lead as Jordan Mynahan and Lauren DeBlois set her up this time.

The Rangers (13-3-1) had their chances in the first period as they peppered 12 shots on goal in the first period. They finally capitalized with 1:09 remaining in the opening frame when Courtney Sullivan put home the loose puck in the crease. Erin Molloy was credited with the lone assist on the goal.

“We told them they need to bare down. We need to make simple plays,” Guerin said. “We need to make simple plays to get the puck deep in their zone. That was the highlight of the night being down 2-1 at the end of the first.”

Despite the score, Dumont said Greely came to play.

“Regardless of the score, they generate chances,” Dumont said. “They weren’t finishing them, but they are a young team. Obviously, if they finish a few more of them, it’s a different story. Absolutely, they always do. They are a good transition team. They move the puck top the net very quickly. It’s a good effort by us heading towards the end of the year here.”

In the second period, it was all the Blue Devils. In their first power play of the evening, Lemieux and Erin Hubbard found an open DeBlois on the backdoor where he fired the puck into the net 57 seconds into the stanza.

One thing Dumont liked about the power-play goal was the communication by his players.

“Erica on the other side of the ice has to make the read really quick to DeBlois,” Dumont said. “DeBlois called for it, which I really liked. It was a real good effort, and she has quite the shot and she buried that.”

Allison Frechette stretched the lead to 4-1 when she scored on an unassisted breakaway goal 6:29 into the period.

Corinne Laberge capped off the scoring in the second period with two goals. Her first one came 12:39 into the period with Jaylin Cloutier. Lemieux and DeBlois set the second goal up with 56 seconds to go in the period.

“Getting one goal right after other, it’s easier because your momentum is still going,” Laberge said.

She finished the hat trick after she potted home the rebound from Lemieux’s initial shot 3:29 into the third period.

Greely scored a power play goal with 3:25 remaining in the game with Ellie Schad notching the goal. Assists went to Maura Verrill and Leah Poulin.

Greely was 1 of 2 on the man advantage while Lewiston was perfect scoring on their only chance.

Lewsiton goalie Paige Fontaine made 21 saves for the victory while Nica Todd stopped 12 shots.
