LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine is offering several programs to help children of all ages stay active, learn life skills and spark their creativity during the cold winter months.
Sculpting Class for Kids! on Tuesdays beginning Feb. 3. Join Jocelyn French, local teacher and YWCA Art Camp director, for a 6-week session of sculpting classes. Participants will explore different types of sculptures using clay, beads and more. Session 1 for children ages 5-8 will be from 5-6 p.m.; Session 2 for children ages 9-12, from 6-7 p.m. Cost is $50 for YWCA members; $90 for non-members.
American Red Cross Babysitting Course will prepare youth with the training every parent wants in a babysitter: home and outdoor safety, basic child care, safe play, first aid, critical emergency skills, and professional leadership and care-giving skills. Each participant will receive an ARC child and infant CPR certification. This class is geared toward pre-teen/teenagers ages 11-15. Classes will be held Monday, Feb. 16, and Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participants must register on or before Feb. 11. Cost is $75 for YWCA members; $90 for non-members.
Little Sparks Toddler Karate was created for children ages 2-4. This half-hour class is full of fun and learning, and helps toddlers develop listening skills, teaches them how to follow directions and take turns. The students also work on balance, tumbling, and basic Karate blocks, as well as stranger danger self-defense. The 6-week program begins Saturday, Feb. 14, and runs through March 21, from 10-10:30 a.m. Cost is $50 for members; $60 for non-members, plus an additional uniform fee.
Children’s Karate is geared toward kids ages 5-12. This class will focus on providing tools for the child to grow into a strong role model. Participants are taught that Karate starts and ends in self-defense and it should never be used to harm others. They are also taught the importance of leading by example and building self-confidence. This class includes one additional class each week at the Phoenix Karate Academy Dojo in Auburn. The 6-week program begins Saturday, Feb. 14, and runs through March 21 from 9-10 a.m. Cost is $90 for members; $100 for non-members, plus an additional uniform fee.
