CAMDEN — The state fire marshal’s office and Camden police are investigating a Saturday night fire that destroyed a shed on the grounds of the Camden-Rockport Middle School.
Camden fire Chief Chris Farley said Monday that it appears that two people had used the shed as a shelter to keep themselves warm during that very cold night.
The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 p.m. by a resident of Mechanic Street. When the first crews arrived, they found the rubble of a 14-by-20-foot shed. The shed was not located near the school but past the staff parking lot by the woods.
The first person that reached the destroyed shed noticed two separate sets of footprints leading to and from the smoldering rubble. An investigator from the fire marshal’s office arrived that night as did a deputy with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office accompanied by a bloodhound. The dog was able to track the scent of the two people to a home on Gould Street.
The fire chief said Camden police officers and a state fire investigator were to meet to review their findings. No one has been charged.
The shed had a few metal chairs and stools inside, but it was last used regularly when the high school was located in Camden and had stored gardening and composting items. Another nearby shed, which contains athletic equipment, was not damaged by the fire.
