100 years ago, 1915
Ten cases of whiskey and a barrel of wines consigned to a Lewiston resident were confiscated Thursday at noon by Deputy Sheriff Picard at the lower Maine Central station. The assortment is of the choicest variety and estimated at $200. The stuff was taken to the county building and labeled, and put into the store room. This is one of the largest seizures made by the new squad of liquor deputies.

50 years ago, 1965
The Westminster Street Holiday Lanes last night was the scene of one of the most interesting mis-matches in bowling history as the Auburn Police bowlers took on a team from radio station WLAM in a special, friendly “grudge match.” The competition followed several weeks of verbal battling by both sides. Last night, experience was the difference as the WLAM Five Watts went down to defeat at the hands of the law officers. There was good-natured fun as broadcasters Dick Fixaris and sportscaster-newsman Fred Gage were quickly put into handcuffs and ankle irons as APD Capt. Stephen Smyc looked on.

If the Legislature enacts a bill intending to reduce toxic substances in the workplace and to minimize the generation of hazardous wastes, the city of Auburn could lose one of its major industries, an opponent of the bill said Monday. That’s what the Energy and Natural Resources Committee was told by John Jalbert of Mechanic Falls, vice president of engineering for Pioneer Plastics Corp. “We will consider de-mothballing a closed plant in Wisconsin and mothballing our Auburn plant,” Jalbert said while testifying against the bill.
