1925 – 2015

LEWISTON—Edgar Joseph Bonneau, 89, of 100 Campus Ave., Lewiston, died Monday, Feb. 2, at the d’Youville Pavilion.

He was born in St. Narcisse, P.Q., Canada, on Sept. 12, 1925, the youngest of 10 children of Joseph Bonneau and Emma Langlois Bonneau. His family moved to the area, and he was educated in local schools, including St. Dominic High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army’s 90th Infantry Division from 1943 to 1945. He landed on Utah Beach on the second day of the D-Day invasion, and fought through the entire liberation of France, earning two Purple Heart Medals in the process.

After the war, he returned to Lewiston. On April 10, 1947, he married Marie Louise Tartre, who passed away on July 2, 1961.

On Feb. 2, 1963, he married his second wife, Isabelle C. Tartre.

He was a founder and partner in Bonneau’s Master Market and co-owner of the Bonneau Shopping Plaza. He also served as a corporator and trustee of Androscoggin County Savings Bank.

For the majority of his life, Edgar enjoyed spending his summers at a cottage or condo in Old Orchard Beach, tending to his flower and vegetable gardens. His retirement years found him and his wife, Isabelle, spending winters in Florida and taking various trips throughout New England.

Edgar loved listening to music, especially classic Broadway show songs while relaxing on the porch at his home or at the beach, and cooking in the kitchen.

Edgar touched the lives of many people in the community and he maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end of his life.

Survivors include his loving wife, Isabelle, of Lewiston; four children, Suzanne Pratt and husband, Richard, of Portland, Ore., Ronald Bonneau and wife, Marla, of Scarborough, Diane Morrison and husband, Steve, of North Yarmouth, and Albert Bonneau and wife, Pamela, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; a brother, Euclide Bonneau and wife, Irene, of Lewiston; and five grandchildren, Kathleen Pratt, Stephanie Morrison, Stephen Bonneau, Katherine Bonneau and Kyle Morrison; and a great-granddaughter, Scarlet Hoffman of Portland, Ore.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters and five brothers.

The family extends their sincere thanks to the staff at the d’Youville Pavilion and the Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for the wonderful care provided for their father.
