1925 – 2015

LAKE MARY, Fla.—Roland L. Hamel passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 18, surrounded by family at his home in Lake Mary, Fla.

Roland was born June 10, 1925, in Turner to Oliver Hamel and Marion Lachapelle Hamel. He served in the U.S. Army at the close of World War II and while stationed in Germany, he married Maria Cacilie Foeh (now deceased).

He settled in Hebron, where he built a business picking up milk at local farms for delivery to the dairy, logging and, as was the way back then, doing anything that was needed.

In 1965, he married Adelheid D. R. Southards (deceased) of South Paris. Later, they moved to Auburn, where they ran the Sleepytime Motel and both drove their truck cross-country until their retirement to Lake Mary.

Roland loved God, family and work. He took life in stride with the same grace that he practiced ballroom dancing. He respected people for who they were and was a good example to those who knew him.

He is survived by daughters, Barbara and her husband, Al Vaughan, of Ocala, Fla., and Heidemarie and her husband, Rodney Bryant, of Hebron; stepdaughter, Rosemarie Pulkkinen and her husband, Gary Flament, of Auburn; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, and many other relatives and friends.
