AUBURN — Electronics retailer Radio Shack announced it will sell up to 2,400 stores — 13 of them in Maine, including Auburn and Oxford.

In an Associated Press story Monday, the one-time electronic gadget giant founded in 1921 is said to have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is liquidating many of its stores. The AP said Radio Shack received rescue financing in the fall but its CEO recently said the chain still might not be viable in the long run.

In Auburn, closing signs hung in the window and from the ceiling of the Auburn Mall. An “All sales final” sign was affixed near the register as many of the shelves sat empty.

An employee said only the corporate headquarters could say when the store will close.

A short walk around the corner revealed women’s apparel store Deb is also going out of business and liquidating its stock.

There are 15 other empty retail spaces in Auburn Mall. Some are packed with motorcycles, carousel parts and odd furniture displays, more resembling glass-fronted storage units than retail spaces.

The other Radio Shack stores closing in Maine are Portland, South Portland, Brunswick, Wells, Topsham, two in Augusta, two in Bangor, Machias and Standish.

Other Deb stores closing in Maine are in Augusta, Bangor, Presque Isle and South Portland, according to published reports.
