Now is a good time to clean your closet and donate cleaned, gently worn or new prom gowns and accessories by Friday, March 20, and we will give them away for free to high school students at our Fairy Godmother Prom Gown Giveaway event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St., Auburn.

Last year we had 65 girls attend this event and they came from all over the state. We hope to double the number of girls at this year’s event. Gowns not selected at the giveaway will be donated to other nonprofits or worthy causes.

Can you help? Can you donate a prom gown or accessories to WLU’s Prom Gown Giveaway event? We are also looking for donated prizes that can be used on prom night to give to participating attendees whose names are drawn at this event. Last year we gave away coupons for a corsage, boutonniere, massages, chocolates, restaurant dining, and more.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Once again, we’re asking for your help in promoting our annual fundraiser for Free The Kids. You have contributed to the success of our endeavor and we are very grateful.

Catholic Financial Life, formerly Union Saint-Jean-Baptiste Chapter Ste. Croix No. 413, is inviting area residents to join them in their annual family bottle drive to benefit Fr. Marc Boisvert’s Hope Village in Haiti.

Free The Kids is a nonprofit organization founded by Father Marc, a former U.S. Navy chaplain who has dedicated his life to Haitian orphans. Since the 2010 earthquake, Project Hope (Pwoje Espwa) is now taking care of more than 800 orphans, providing shelter, medical care, education and a soup kitchen.

Donations are down this year because of other crises throughout the world. With the help of area donors, our chapter is hoping to raise enough money to qualify for matching funds from Catholic Financial Life. Last year, our joint efforts brought in $8,570.

Please save your bottles from May 1-31. Redeem your bottles and send us a check by June 7. Cash donations will also be very much appreciated. Please make checks payable to: Catholic Financial Life Chapter No. 413, c/o Jean Gastonguay, 237 Pleasant St., Lewiston, ME 04240.

Father Marc Boisvert, OMI is a Lewiston native. Let’s support his mission. You can make a difference in the lives of these poor orphans. To find out more about Father Marc’s orphanage, check out his blog at freethekids.org. — Jean Gastonguay, jmgartist@gmail.com.
