1931 – 2015

LEWISTON — Albert G. Stevens Jr., 83, of Elm Street, Sabattus, died Sunday, Feb. 15, at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Greene on July 19, 1931, a son of Albert G. Sr. and Hazel Wilkins Stevens. Albert attended school in Greene and graduated from Lewiston High School in the Class of 1950. He married Beverly Earle on Sept. 25, 1953, at Greene Baptist Church; they were married for 61 years.

Albert started Stevens Feed store in 1956, and as the business grew, Albert entered into a partnership with Lester Wood. During this time, he was a trustee of the Community Baptist Church in Sabattus and also served on the finance committee of Sabattus Credit Union. He was also an elected tax collector for Sabattus from 1963 to 1973.

Albert was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 110 in Monmouth, and a member of Kora Shrine in Lewiston.

He was elected to the Maine House of Representatives and served 10 years, and then served in the Maine Senate for two years. The committees he served on were aging, retirement and veterans committees, as well as the business legislation and legal affairs committees while in the Maine House of Representatives. In the Senate, he was the chairperson of the transportation committee and also served on the legal and veterans affairs committees.

He was a kind and gentle man who loved his family dearly and will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly, of Sabattus; three daughters, Marla Stevens of Denver, Colo., Margo Smith of Monmouth and Martha Frost of Falmouth; seven grandchildren, Jenna Overgaard, Jake Muzzy, Brandon Smith, Jared Smith, Lindsey Smith, Troy Frost and Brady Frost; two great-grandsons, Owen and Ethan Overgaard; two brothers, Robert Stevens of Sabattus and Clifford “Buzz” Stevens of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Edna Prince, of Ocala, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Walter, Frank and Richard Stevens; and his sister, Eleanor M. Stevens.
