100 years ago, 1915
Caught in the act of robbery in the J. J. Shapiro & Bros., department store in Broad street, Auburn, two men made a spectacular escape from police officers and the proprietors of the store at 2 a.m. Tuesday. Several shots were fired at the fleeing men. As one shot was fired, one of the men fell only to got on his feet again and it has been thought that he was hit.
50 years ago, 1965
Throngs of participants and onlookers alike flocked to the Lost Valley Ski area in Auburn this morning, the site of the fourth annual Auburn Parks and Recreation Department Junior Ski Carnival. A large number of Auburn youngsters, six years of age and over, participated in the fun-filled program held under beautiful sunny skies.
25 years ago, 1990
No one was seriously injured in an explosion at the Auburn School Department building at 23 High St. Tuesday morning, but much of the building and its contents received considerable soot damage. The explosion, “blew the front door off the boiler,” said Jude Cyr, business manager. “The whole building shook. It felt like 7.5 on the Richter scale.” The heating system, he said, ran out of oil over the weekend, but the boiler was re-started Monday after a chilly morning. It exploded when it came back on.
