1958 – 2015

LEWISTON — Betty J. Pownall, 56, of 3 Lincoln Circle, Lewiston, died Saturday, Feb. 28, at Central Maine Medical Center following a long illness.

She was born in Everett, Mass., on Sept. 29, 1958, the daughter of Charles E. Sr. and Edith M. (Bent) Toomey, and had been a resident of this community for most of her life. She attended Gray schools and attended Gray-New Gloucester High School.

She was employed for many years as a personal care aide for various nursing homes in the Lewiston and Auburn area.

Betty enjoyed playing bingo, going to the casino in Oxford and Foxwoods, neighborhood gatherings, loved to visit yard sales with her family and friends, tending to her flower garden, feeding the birds and squirrels and, most of all, enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred A. Pownall, whom she married on June 1, 1996, of Lewiston; her mother, Edith Toomey of Auburn; two sons, Frank Sanborn Jr. of Lewiston and Dwayne Sanborn of Falmouth; four grandchildren, Haley, Hannah, Erykah and Konner Sanborn; six sisters, Edie Linscott and her husband, Zeke, of Florida, May Eastman and her companion, Marcel St. Cyr, of Lewiston, Joyce Hamilton and her husband, Jeff, of New Gloucester, Karen Toomey of Florida, Dotty Toomey and her companion, Eric Wildes, of Kennebunkport and Sherrie Pelletier of Auburn; one brother, Charles Toomey of Auburn; and several nieces and nephews.
