1931 – 2015

RUMFORD — Nellie F. Burgess, 83, died Wednesday, March 4, at her residence on Crescent Ave in Rumford.

She was born in Rumford on July 29, 1931, a daughter of Ambrose B. and Reta M. (Peabody) Milligan. She was a graduate of Stephens High School in Rumford and worked as a bank teller at Casco Bank. She also managed the Rumford Cinema.

She was married in Rumford on April 11, 1953, to Richard N. “Dick” Burgess, who died in Rumford on June 24, 2005.

Nellie was an active member of the Rumford United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer, and belonged to the Sarah Ann Study Group and Mary and Martha Group. She was also a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout master.
She will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She was also devoted to her siblings and was well known for making pastries.

Survivors include her daughter, Reta Purington of Rumford; grandchildren, Christopher Burgess and his wife, Caryn, of Waterboro, Aaron Burgess of Jay, Marie McCafferty and her husband, David, of Sidney, and James White Jr. and his companion, Clarissa Fish, of Milton; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Colby, Brylee and Brayden of Sydney, and Jacob, Brooke, Alex, Haylee, Lee and MacKenzie of Rumford; a brother, Merle Milligan and his wife, Katherine, of Florida.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard; a son, Gregory Burgess; and many loving brothers and sisters ad their spouses.
