1925 – 2015

LEWISTON — Norman R. Veilleux, 89, a lifelong resident of Lewiston, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 8, surrounded by family at d’Youville Pavilion, after a brief illness.

Norman was born on Dec. 31, 1925. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1943, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a machinist’s mate aboard the USS Harlequin. During his time in the Navy, he saw action in the Western Pacific, including the Philippines. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 22, which he joined upon his discharge from the Navy in 1946.

On Feb. 22, 1952, Norm married the love of his life, Madeline Nadeau.

Norm, an industrial electrician with Kerr Electric Co., worked on many notable facilities, including International Paper in Jay and Rumford, Great Northern Paper in Millinocket and several other paper mills throughout Maine. His very successful career culminated in a management position during the construction of the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant. He retired in 1987.

He was a member of IBEW Local 567 for 69 years and, in retirement, he maintained many friendships with former colleagues. Many stories of their shared experiences were retold during their monthly lunch get-togethers at Pat’s Pizza in Auburn.

Always one with a good joke and a quick smile, Norm developed friendships across Maine as well as in other parts of the country, including Alaska and Florida, where he and his wife, Madeline, frequently visited.

A communicant of the Prince of Peace Parish, Norm was a significant contributor to the restoration of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Madeline Nadeau Veilleux; son, Pierre (Judy); daughter, Marie; and grandchildren, Kristopher Joseph Murphy and Philip, Eric and Jonathan Veilleux.

He was predeceased by his parents, Josephat and Rosilda Dostie Veilleux; a daughter, Rachel (Stanley) Stromme; and his loving aunt, Claire Dostie.
