OLD TOWN – The city’s airport committee is exploring the possibility of building a new hangar at DeWitt Field.
According to City Councilor Stan Peterson, who sits on the committee, there currently is a 20 person waiting list for hangar space at DeWitt. Peterson said the committee is mulling the possibility of an eight bay hangar to ease the wait.
According to Peterson, the cost of such a structure has been estimated at $310,000. He said the committee is debating taking a loan out, rather than having the hangar as a budgeted city item, with hangar fees to cover the cost while still allowing a slight return on the investment. But other councilors told Peterson at their meeting last week that in the past the city has offered monies for projects out of fund balance, at a lower interest than what may be offered via a bank.
Peterson said he would inform the committee of that option and get back to the council with more details on the project at a future date.
