GRAY — Winter is making a comeback in Maine a day after temperatures rose into the 50s in Lewiston-Auburn.

And powerful gusts are making it all the more miserable. Tom Hawley from the National Weather Service says the wind has gusted to 50 mph at Chebeague Island, 43 mph in Frenchville, 40 mph at Cape Neddick and 36 in Portland.

Those gusts are making the temperatures in the teens and 20s feel much colder.

Maine State Police say icy road conditions in southern Maine played a role in a series of crashes and necessitated road closures and a speed limit reduction.

Authorities closed U.S. Route 1 south of Ogunquit during the Thursday morning rush hour because of the conditions. The road has since reopened. Police also report multiple crashes on Interstate 95 in Biddeford and Wells. The Wells crash left four injured, none seriously.

Police reduced the speed limit on the Maine Turnpike from New Hampshire to Falmouth, Maine, to 45 mph on Thursday morning. The speed limit restriction has since been lifted.

Emera Maine is reporting more than 1,000 power outages, mostly in Aroostook County. Central Maine Power is reporting more than 100 power outages.
