ROXBURY — The Board of Selectmen will discuss Tuesday evening whether to install signs near the Roxbury Pond area warning residents of blowing snow and whiteout conditions, Board of Selectmen Chairman John Sutton said Monday.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m., March 24, at the Roxbury Town Office.

Sutton said that he and the board were considering putting up a road sign near Roxbury Pond because of the combination of high snowbanks and powerful gusts of wind, which are creating visibility problems.

“If you want to see some impressive snowbanks, check out some of the roads near Roxbury Pond,” Sutton said. “Some of the snowbanks are as high as the camps. Some of them are piled up two feet under the telephone wires, if you can believe it.”

The town’s snowplow contractor, Pat Gorham, is attempting to keep the roads clean, Sutton said, adding that it has been difficult to keep the roads open.

“We want to put a sign out there that warns drivers that there’s a lot of blowing snow in the area, and that we may have snow machinery out trying to make the roads clear.”

In other business, selectmen will vote on whether to approve a letter to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife documenting the services that the town and other volunteers have contributed to the boat launch on Roxbury Pond. Sutton said that Roxbury received a state grant in 2010 from the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to construct the boat launch.

The grant stipulated that the town had to do a number of “in-kind services” related to the boat launch, as the “town’s contribution to the project,” Sutton said.

“We had some volunteers do milfoil surveys and we installed a Porta Potty down there,” Sutton said. “Every year, we give an annual update to the department to show them what we’re doing.”
