Because someone on the line refused to “get off” even when told that fire was spreading toward the house and the wire was wanted for emergency, a Rowe’s Corner woman had to rush to a neighbor’s telephone, Thursday morning, to summon aid. A blaze started in the dry grass and rapidly spread toward the house. The woman explained the situation but the persons talking flatly refused to give up the line.
50 years ago, 1965
The Lewiston mayor, yesterday afternoon, pitched in and gave a hand during the Sabin Polio Vaccine clinic which took place at the Health Office in the city building. Although there was pre-registration for the clinic held several weeks ago, a great many Lewiston residents appeared for the vaccine yesterday who had not registered. This made it quite busy for the health department workers. Mayor Robert L. Couturier apparently saw the problem and stepped in and started typing registration cards.
25 years ago, 1990
A Maine-based company engaged in processing and recycling scrap tires may be coming to Auburn if the City Council approves the request tonight. P.K.A. Transporters Inc. of Portland is looking first for council approval, not Planning Board approval, because the nature of the business is one “not typically desired.” If controlled through site plan review, however, it could be a welcome addition to the city’s industrial base, according to a report filed by James P. McPhee, director of land use planning and development.
