Steve Swan should not have been expelled from the Eagles Club No. 1248 in Rumford for standing up for all the non-smokers of the club (including myself).

About eight to 10 years ago, I tried to speak to the board of trustees of the club concerning the smoking issue. The secretary of the club was present at that time. I was cursed at and called names. The language used against me was very inappropriate and uncalled for.

There was a vote held for members on the smoking/non-smoking issue, but no newsletter or notification was sent to the members alerting them to the vote. Members’ voting rights were denied.

I cannot believe that, with all the money raised by the Eagles Club to fight cancer and find a cure, that club administration would be so adamant about allowing smoking in the club, thereby denying non-smokers access and the ability to use the club for socializing.

Why would any Eagles Club that truly cares about its members allow smoking in the club at all? With all the information about the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke, why would they endanger part of their membership?
