1923 – 2015
FALMOUTH — Ruth Richardson Higgins Horsman died Tuesday, April 7, at Falmouth by the Sea Hospice Care.
She was born in Bar Harbor Nov. 28, 1923, the daughter of late Thomas Carol and Armida Richardson Higgins. Ruth graduated from Bar Harbor High School and University of Maine at Orono in 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts in theater.
She lived in New York City and worked for Standard Oil Co., Life Magazine and Harlem Theatre, where she met her husband, Dr. Donald H. Horsman and married him on Sept. 2, 1950.
Ruth and Don moved to the Lewiston-Auburn area, where Donald practiced medicine at Central Maine General Hospital. Ruth was very active in Community Little Theatre, acting and directing many productions.
Summers were enjoyed at their cottage on Taylor Pond, sailing and supporting events at the Taylor Pond Yacht Club. The family also set out crusing the coast of Maine on the beloved 28-foot sloop rig, Euphoria.
After Don’s passing, she taught fourth grade at Fairview School in Auburn, where she passed on her passion of theater to her students and was honored with the naming of the Horsman Stage at Fairview Children’s Theatre.
She is survived by three sons, Peter and his wife, Beth, of South Portland, Philip and his wife, Katie, of Avon, Colo., and John Richardson Horsman of Auburn; two grandchildren, Claire Berry and her husband, Jason, of Portland, and William Donald Horsman of Portland.
