FARMINGTON — The cause of smoke in the Education Center at the University of Maine at Farmington on Tuesday evening remained under investigation late Tuesday, Clyde Ross, deputy chief of Farmington Fire and Rescue, said at the scene.
Firefighters were called out for a structure fire at the center at about 7:30 p.m., he said. They found smoke but no flames in the building. By 8:30 p.m., they were still looking for the cause. Exhaust fans were set up to clear the smoke, he said.
Several fire departments were at Mt. Blue High School for a traffic incident management class when the call came in, he said. They all responded to assist the Farmington department.
About 65 firefighters from Farmington, Industry, Chesterville, Jay, New Sharon, New Vineyard, Temple and Wilton arrived on scene. Some searched the building as others waited on the street wearing air packs and getting ready to enter the building, he said.
NorthStar Ambulance and Farmington Police Department personnel were also on scene.
