LEWISTON — Robert A. Lapointe passed away Sunday, Feb. 22. April 21 would have been his 66th birthday. Bob lived in the Lewiston/Auburn area for most of his life.

He loved Maine, often referring to the state as “God’s country.” Bob was a Christian, who revered Jesus Christ and did his best to spread the story of salvation.

Robert served in the U.S. Army and was the owner/proprietor of three businesses; Lapointe’s Auto Body in Lewiston, Grandpa’s Trains and Toys and Trains-R-Us in Greene.

Bob was a car man and an even bigger hobbyist, having owned several automobiles and trucks in his lifetime while collecting and building either model cars and/or model train layouts. He won several trophies for both his vehicle entries in numerous car shows and model car contests.

Bob was in the midst of his masterpiece when God called him home; an awe-inspiring O-scale model train layout, suspended from his apartment ceiling and spanning its perimeter.

Hot Rod (Bob’s CB radio handle) loved Elvis, NASCAR, trains, American muscle cars and a hot cup of tea, year round. He enjoyed flea markets, a good cheeseburger, listening to country music and haggling for the best deal on a great find at a hobby or pawn shop. A force to be reckoned with at billiards, Bob was a serious gamer and impossible to beat in any game or contest if one was foolish enough to “talk smack.”

Robert is survived by his mother, Murielle Lapointe; siblings, Janet Friend and Diane Hayes and their spouses; children, Tammy Lapointe and Kathy McDavid and her spouse; grandchildren, Darren, Tim, Kiaya and Akeem; and a multitude of other family members and friends.

Bob’s family will come together this spring to celebrate and honor his life, having chosen a beautiful oceanview site in Maine as his final resting place. Although our hearts are broken and the tears keep coming, we’ll smile at each railroad crossing in our path and whenever American muscle pulls up beside us at a red light, idling loudly and smelling of gasoline, we’ll grin widely … and should that 442 peel out, we will rejoice.
