GREENWOOD — A local band is hosting a benefit Sunday at the American Legion Hall on Gore Road to raise money for the Meals on Wheels program, which is struggling with an ever-growing waiting list.
Valerie Cole, an elder service specialist with SeniorsPlus, will sing and play the tambourine with the Shadagee Ramblers from 2 to 5 p.m., May 3.
Cole said band members noticed the waiting list for the Meals on Wheels program, offered locally through SeniorsPlus, had more than 100 people, and decided that they wanted to do something to help out.
“There really is a lot of passion in the community, and we decided to give back by performing,” Cole said. “We asked the American Legion in Locke Mills if we could perform there, and they agreed to donate the venue to us.”
The Shadagee Ramblers perform a “mixture of classic country and old-time music,” Cole said. “We basically play anything that’s popular with the audience.”
Tickets to the event will be $10 at the door and $8 in advance.
“We’re hoping that the performance will become contagious in the community, and that people find other ways to help,” Cole said. “The demand for the Meals on Wheels program is increasing, but there isn’t enough funding to support it.”
