This is in response to the Sun Journal article, “Road signs oppose Maine Turnpike tolls” (April 21).

How about Stavros Mendros — “Tear down the rhetoric.”

Regular E-ZPass commuters from Lewiston to Portland pay less than 3 1/4 cents per mile. Those from Biddeford pay 1/4 cent more.

Maine Turnpike tolls are among the cheapest in the United States and 66 percent of the cost is being paid by travelers from out of state.

If Mendros and others want to “Tear Down These Tolls,” muster the courage to raise the state gas tax by 10 cents per gallon. That is what it would take to stop tolling Maine’s busiest highway.
