SOUTH PORTLAND — South Portland police are investigating the discovery of a man’s body along the banks of the Fore River.

Authorities say the body was found Tuesday afternoon by a passer-by on the shore at the end of Buttonwood Road, an area just north of the Casco Bay Bridge.

Witnesses say the body was dressed in gray and white skate sneakers, cargo pants and possibly a sweatshirt and jacket.

Police are working with the state medical examiner to determine the manner of death and the person’s identity so family members can be notified.

Lt. Frank Clark says police are treating the suspicious death as a possible homicide until it’s been determined otherwise.
