LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women has highlighted three special holiday programs in May:
* May 1. Food, games and crafts focused on the ancient celebration of May Day.
* May 4. Introduction to the Mexican festival of Cinco de Mayo.
* May 7. Annual ritual at 12:30 p.m. for Mother’s Day to support those who find the observance difficult.
Other May events include:
* May 5: Serve With Liberty volunteers from Liberty Mutual will help turn over the garden plots, remove stones and add compost provided by Lots to Gardens. Others are welcome to also assist. Herb seedlings will be planted later in the month.
* May 19 at noon: Paul Drowns from the Nutrition Center will come for the Peasant Pantry prep group. Participants will prepare a simple, one-dish meal that will be served to the wider community between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 21. Reservations are appreciated. There is no charge, but donations are accepted.
* May 7. The regular What’s Cookin’? class will highlight spring salads. This class offers tips for healthy and affordable eating will be offered at 12:30 p.m. on May 12.
* May 26. The Book Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. with Ann Auer leading the discussion. The group will start a new book, “Crow and Weasel,” by Barry Lopez. It is a mystical story about an internal journey toward wisdom. A few library copies of the book will be available for borrowing at the Center.
* May 20. Playing with Poetry class is set for 10 a.m., led by Hannah Tardie from Bates College. It involves gently experiencing poems through both reading and writing. She will also offer a collage class at 10 a.m. on May 8. The weekly Writing Workshop with Pat Gardiner continues at 10 a.m. each Monday.
* May 6. Crafts in May include a special card-making class, just in time for Mother’s Day giving on May 6. Patty Weidler will lead the morning session at 10:30 a.m., but materials will be available all day.
* May 18 and 19. A branch weaving program will take place in the afternoon of May 18 and the morning of the May 19. Participants will be using branches, yarn and other items to make a creative wall hanging or mobile.
* May 13 and May 20. Joyce will lead projects using foam materials 10:30 a.m, May 13 and 12:30 p.m. May 20.
* May 26. Regular end-of-month activities include bingo at 10 a.m.
* May 28. The monthly women’s clothing give-away will take place all day.
* May 27. The Art Van visits at 10 a.m. followed by the May birthday party at 12:30 p.m..
* May 14. The Sophia Circle at the Center will offer an in-house Fashion Show at 12:30 p.m. It has gathered and coordinated items donated for the monthly clothing give-away and will show them off as ways to spiff up second-hand clothes.
* Wednesdays. The Center has announced a new support group: Women for Sobriety. It will meet from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays starting May 20 and will be led by Lise Pelletier. It is a step-based group that is an alternative to AA and for women only. Please call with questions or if you are interested.
* Mondays. A Trauma Recovery and Empowerment group, run by Health Affiliates Maine, meets from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays. An Al-Anon group, the only one in Lewiston, meets at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
* May 28. The BLT group for Bisexual, Lesbian and Transgendered women and their friends or family will meet at 2 p.m. May 28.
The Center is continually in need of donations of hygiene items to give away. Needed are full-size, unopened, basic items such as shampoo and conditioner, tampons and pads, deodorant, toothpaste and brushes. Unopened smaller sample sizes will also currently be accepted to be used for outreach packs. This is a regular ongoing need and contributions of these supplies is very much appreciated.
The Center’s hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. It will be closed for a Board strategic planning day on Friday the May 15 and on Memorial Day.
