PARIS — The former treasurer of a snowmobile club in Mexico pleaded guilty Tuesday to writing himself checks and cashing them, and has agreed to repay the club nearly $10,000.

James McDonald of Mexico pleaded guilty to felony theft in Oxford County Superior Court on Tuesday.

In exchange for the plea deal, prosecutors agreed that if McDonald repays the club within a year, he can plead to a misdemeanor count.

Between July 1, 2012, and April 2014, McDonald used his role as treasurer of the Mexico Trail Blazers Club to take more than $10,000 for himself. He is required to repay $9,800 in restitution and a $200 fine.

He was confronted by police after an audit of the club’s accounts. He later admitted to writing himself checks and cashing them at local stores, according to Assistant District Attorney Richard Beauchesne.

According to club officials, around $17,000 was reported missing, leaving the club in doubt whether they could maintain the trail system.

McDonald, a former selectman, apologized for his actions saying they were out of character with his history of service to the community.
