Beacon House to hold craft fair May 9

RUMFORD — The Beacon House will have a craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Eagles Club.

Crafters and vendors from all around are welcome to take part in this event.

Table rentals are $15 for one and $25 for two.

There will be a chili cook-off for those interested. There is a $5 entry fee.

The event includes a Chinese auction, childrens’ corner and karaoke.

Student artists showcased in Jay

JAY — Jay Elementary School has 24 young artists who have their artwork on display at the Chuck Wagon Restaurant for the month of May.

The spring show of art from Jay Elementary School was created under the artistic direction of Elementary Art Educator Tamara Lindsey.

The Artists’ Opening Reception will be held at the restaurant from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 13.

Bridgton presentation to discuss African plants, animals

BRIDGTON — Delta Kappa Gamma will hold a presentation on plants and animals of Africa at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the Stevens Brook elementary school in Bridgton.

The presentation will be lead by Susan Stinchfield-Plaisted, a former middle school science teacher from Bridgton, who has spent time in Africa. She will discuss plant and animal adaptations and the Zulu tribal village.

The event is opened to the public and local educators. Light refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m., with the presentation starting at 4 p.m.

Per Past Night is May 13

RUMFORD — Per Pasta Night will be held at the Rumford Lodge of Elks No. 862 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 13.

The Chinese auction will be drawn at 7 p.m.

The cost is $5. The event is open to members and guests.

Harrison Lutheran Cemetery Association to meet

HARRISON — The annual meeting of the Harrison Lutheran Cemetery Association will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the home of Daphne Chaplin, directly across from the Harrison Lutheran Cemetery.

Step Falls nature hike set for May 14

NEWRY — Western Mountains Senior College will sponsor a nature hike at Step Falls in Newry and a potluck dinner at the Mahoosuc Mountain Lodge Thursday, May 14.

Lynne Zimmerman of Bethel will lead the leisurely one-mile hike to identify spring wildflowers and enjoy the waterfalls. The group will meet at 4 p.m. at the parking area for the Step Falls Preserve, located on Route 26. Hikers should wear appropriate footwear and bring a water bottle and insect repellent.

The Step Falls hike will be followed by a potluck dinner at the Mahoosuc Mountain Lodge, also on Route 26. Participants should bring a dish to share, which can be dropped off at the lodge on the way to Step Falls or brought after the hike.

This event is part of WMSC’s Down Home Maine series, and is free and open to the public.

Audubon to discus lynx at monthly program

FARMINGTON — Western Maine Audubon will hold its monthly program at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, in Room C 23, Roberts Learning Center, University of Maine at Farmington. The program will be “What’s New with Maine’s Canada Lynx?”

Mark McCollough, lead biologist for the Canada lynx for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the Northeast, will discuss the ecology and habitats of the Canada lynx in Maine, the latest research and policy concerning the recovery of this big cat.

This program is free and open to the public.
