LIVERMORE FALLS — An 1897 cannon at Union Park is getting a face-lift.

Donald Simoneau, a member of the George Bunten American Legion Post No. 10 in Livermore Falls, said he raised $3,000 to help pay for two new 60-inch cannon wheels and stub axles that are being built. His fundraising started in December 2014.

“As of two weeks ago, I have banked that money from donations,” he said in an e-mail.

An account has been created at Otis Federal Credit Union in Jay for the cannon. Simoneau said it used to be in front of Livermore Falls High School.

In addition to the cannon project, Simoneau has been raising money to replace the 120 American flags lining the road from Spruce Mountain High School in Jay to the former Livermore Falls High School. The flags have lined Main Street since the Gulf War began in 1990 and have remained with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

“The flags we have used the last few years are not fit to put back up this year,” he said. “They are too worn, tattered, and have reached the end of their service.”

He said he raised $850 toward the $2,500 for flags through donations. He is accepting $25 donations in the name of a veteran.

He has been sitting on Main Street from 8:30 a.m. to around 2 p.m. each Saturday collecting for the project.

“I am very proud of the support I have received,” he said. “We have the best communities around.”

At least 30 of the 6-foot tangle-free flagpoles must also be replaced and Simoneau plans to sit on Main Street to collect for them.

Donations can be mailed to Donald Simoneau, American Legion Post 10, 17 Reynolds Ave., Livermore Falls, ME 04254 or brought to Otis Federal Credit Union in Jay. Make checks payable to the American Legion Cannon Fund, or to the American Legion, with Cannon Project written in the note area. Money will be used for the cannon, flags and flagpoles.
