RUMFORD — The Regional School Unit 10 Board of Directors on Monday appointed a four-member subcommittee to meet with the district’s lawyer about Byron possibly withdrawing from the district.

The action came following a 75-minute closed session with Drummond, Woodsum lawyer Richard Spencer and school Superintendent Craig King. Byron representative Judy Boucher was asked to leave the session.

Appointed to the subcommittee were Peter DeFilipp of Mexico, Denise Cross of Roxbury, Barbara Chow of Dixfield and Marcia Chaisson of Rumford.

Spencer said the subcommittee should meet with him before the next board meeting May 26 so the full board could discuss his recommendation.

The board’s proposal would be given to the Byron Withdrawal Committee in June.

“Because the withdrawal process is a lengthy one, there is not time for it to occur before June 30,” Spencer said. The earliest Byron could leave RSU 10 is June 30, 2016, he said.

Byron is one of five towns considering pulling out of the district. The others are Canton, Carthage, Peru and Dixfield.

Other district towns are Rumford, Hartford, Sumner, Hanover, Mexico, Buckfield and Roxbury.
