AUBURN — Without debate, councilors voted 6-1 Monday for a $5.7 million bonding plan aimed at repairing roads and replacing equipment.
“The reason this is going so easily is because of the work our staff has done, the goals we have set and our long-term plans,” Councilor Tizz Crowley said. “My complements to you all.”
Interim City Manager Howard Kroll presented his capital improvements budget to councilors last week, calling for spending roughly one-third of the amount for projects that departments had requested. He’s proposing adding $5.7 million in new borrowing for the city and the schools. The city has about $55 million in bonded debt, he said.
Overall, that would be enough for heating and mechanical system upgrades at the Center Street fire station, masonry work at the Auburn Public Library, limited road reconstruction and sidewalk repairs around the city and finishing a baseball field renovation at Pettengill Park.
It would also pay to replace a front-end loader, bucket loader, a one-ton truck, excavator and tractor for the Public Services department, borrow $50,000 to get a matching federal grant for the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport and give the School Department $1.02 million for projects.
