LEWISTON — Mary Dempsey, assistant director of The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing, received an honorary doctor of public service degree from Saint Joseph’s College at the school’s 102nd Commencement on Saturday, May 9.

Dempsey, along with her brother, Patrick, founded the Dempsey Center in 2008 in collaboration with Central Maine Medical Center as the family navigated the cancer journey of their mother, Amanda, who passed away in 2014. The Center was created in honor of Amanda, as a resource to help others impacted by cancer navigate their own journeys.

Mary has been an integral part of the Center since its inception. Among her tireless hours and passion to pursue the mission of the Dempsey Center, she currently manages the volunteer groups for comfort items and community groups, and she has been instrumental in growing the volunteer program from three to more than 200 volunteers.

The Dempsey Center is dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals, families and communities impacted by cancer through support, education, integrative medicine, outreach and prevention. All services are offered free of charge. For more information, call 207-795-8250 or visit www.dempseycenter.org.
