BATH — The Department of Defense on Tuesday awarded Bath Iron Works an $11.3 million modification to an existing contract to perform maintenance sustainment for the entire Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship program.
Under the original contract, scheduled to end in September, the Bath shipyard supported maintenance sustainment for LCS 2 and LCS 4 variant ships, according to BIW spokesman Matt Wickenheiser.
Beginning in September, the shipyard will provide planning yard services for the entire LCS program. Work to be performed under this contract includes availability advanced planning, ship alteration design and logistics support, material support, ship planned maintenance, class services, onboard maintenance and planning of all maintenance availabilities in the U.S. and abroad, Wickenheiser said.
If all options on the contract are exercised by the Navy, the contract could be worth more than $100 million, the Department of Defense said in August.
The littoral combat ship is a fast, agile, focused-mission vessel designed for operation in near-shore environments yet capable of open-ocean operation, according to BIW. It is designed to defeat asymmetric “anti-access” threats, such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface ships.
