WILTON — The Board of Selectpersons dedicated the town report to Doris Cushman this year, Town Manager Rhonda Irish announced at the Wilton Group’s candidate meet and greet held Wednesday at Calzolaio Pasta Company.

Over her 95 years as a citizen, “Cushman has always been involved in activities in Wilton because she loves it so much,” Irish said.

Cushman married Clint Cushman Sr. and had one son, Clint Jr.  She is proudest of being a mother, Irish said.  Her son served for many years as a Selectman of Wilton.

Each day, she has the daily newspaper read to her. She especially wants to hear articles about Wilton and what the Board of Selectpersons have decided, Irish said.

Cushman will often participate by calling Irish, board members or voicing her point of view at town meetings when she doesn’t agree, Irish said. Cushman has been a strong advocate for the library, fire and police departments.

Her involvement with the town started in the 1920’s when she served as a ballot clerk for several years, Irish said. She kept an interest in local politics especially local ordinances that affect the town or environment.

Cushman took courses in Nutrition Education at the University of Maine at Farmington. She then worked for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service as a nutrition educator. She traveled from Eustis to Jay, teaching in elementary schools and with families and senior groups. She retired from that position in 2006.

She helped open the Wilton Historical Society and served on Wilton Free Public Library Board for many years. She is a member of the Wilton Congregational Church where she has sung in the choir for 50 years, according to the dedication.

She is a member of Wiltona, Wilton Homemakers Extension Group and served at the state level as a member of the Nutrition Licensing Board.

Cushman has also climbed Mt. Katahdin a couple times, Irish said.

The town reports are now available. Irish passed out the first copies to Cushman, her daughter-in-law Ruth Cushman and others who attended the meet and greet.
