For the fifth consecutive year, the Squid Jiggers will be headlining the annual Newfoundland Day event this Saturday, June 6 to be held at Mel’s Hilltop Restaurant at the Poland Spring Resort. The Squid Jiggers are a folk music duo comprised of Troy R. Bennett and Auburn native Dave Rowe. The event, which is open to the public, began as a way for the duo to recognize their many area fans who are ex-pat Newfoundlanders, and it has grown year after year to now be one of the band’s best-loved shows. In addition to the music, there will be an authentic Newfoundland buffet (Jigg’s Dinner and Figgy Duff) and a Screech-in ceremony—a Newfoundlander-wanna-be initiation that involves recitations of Newfie verse, kissing a codfish, and drinking a swig of Newfoundland’s “Screech Rum.” Tickets may be purchased online at http://tinyurl.com/nghpg8l. Doors open at 4:30 p.m, the buffet will happen at 5:30 p.m. and the music begins at 7 p.m. For more information, call 207-619-FOLK or visit  http://squidjiggers.com.
