POLAND — Voters on Tuesday rejected Regional School Unit 16’s proposed $20.7 million budget by a vote of 240-255.

The votes by town were: Poland, 104-134; Mechanic Falls, 80-72; and Minot, 56-49.

In Mechanic Falls the vote was 80 yes and 72 no.

The proposed budget, at $20.7 million, was about $750,000 more than the budget for the current fiscal year.

At the district public hearing on May 21, the only item on the proposed budget that generated significant discussion was the proposal to add a business manager position at the central office.

Had the budget passed, it was estimated that property taxes on a property assessed at $100,000 would have increased by $39.42 in Mechanic Falls, by $46.56 in Minot and by $44.33 in Poland.

A total of 497 residents in the three towns turned out at the polls. A year ago, 1,046 voters from the three towns cast ballots.
