AUBURN — Auburn Public Library will launch its teen summer reading program Unmask! at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 23. It will run from June 23 to Aug. 14 and feature heroes of all kinds — real life heroes from the community, national heroes and superheroes — and allow teens to explore the hero within each of them.

The kickoff event on June 23 will feature local heroes from the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society. The GAHS are heroes to the many lost, surrendered and abandoned animals in the community. Teens can meet some of the GAHS heroes (along with a furry friend or two), hear about how they do what they do, and learn about how to help. Teens who bring a donation of pet food will be entered into a drawing for door prizes. This program will take place in the Androscoggin Community Room. Although sign up for the Teen Summer Reading Program is just for teens, ages 12 to 18, other family members are invited to attend this event.

Teens may sign up for the summer reading program starting Monday, June 15. Just for signing up to participate, teens will receive a voucher for a free Sea Dogs ticket. Teens are also entered to win one of four finale prizes:gift card to Bull Moose Music, gift card to the Auburn Mall, a Kindle Paperwhite or a pizza party and movie for 10.

During this eight-week program, teens will keep a reading log. For every 10 books read (or 20 graphic novels), teens will turn their log in at the reference desk to win additional prizes and get another entry into the finale drawings on Aug. 14. New this year, teens may also complete an Activities Log for additional prizes and entries into the finale drawings.

In addition to this kickoff event and weekly programs, APL will offer two other featured programs this summer.

The library will welcome local comic book artist Mike Jordan back to the APL for a comic book workshop, APL Presents, from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, July 14 and 21. In this two-day workshop, teens will create their own character and put together a comic book. Teens must pre-register and be available for both sessions.

Auburn Public Library will welcome bestselling author and Iraq War Veteran Luis Carlos Montalvan and his service dog, “Tuesday,” from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3. Montalvan is the author of “Until Tuesday” and “Tuesday Tucks Me In,” and this will be his first visit to Maine. This event is open to all ages and will include a demonstration of how Tuesday assists Capt. Montalvan in his daily life. There will be a question and answer session, copies of his two books for sale, a book signing and photo opportunities.

All Auburn Public Library teen programs, unless otherwise stated, are just for teens, ages 12-18.
